Abyei: A Sudanese-Led Compact on Land, Oil and Peace

Abyei has been held in suspension for fifteen years by foreign peacekeepers, and that arrangement is running out of money and time.

Unite Sudan Initiative has prepared a 36-month proposal for a settlement led by the people of Abyei and the borderlands. It works in a deliberate order. First, the Ngok Dinka, the Misseriya and their neighbors agree in writing how they share land, water and migration routes. Second, they build a shared income from trade and, where both governments consent, from oil. Third, and only then, they take up the question of Abyei’s final status.

A Council of community delegates would lead the work. Women have defined roles from the start, as market leaders, peace voices, early-warning reporters and Council members, built on what they already do in their communities.

We do not claim a project can reunite Sudan. We do believe Abyei can become a place where both countries gain more from cooperation than from conflict. If that holds, Sudanese citizens will be free to decide what comes next.

The full proposal is available to partners on request.
